My Top 5 Summer Salads

You might not know it from the recent weather in Auckland but it's summer time down here and that means lots of barbeques.  It's the done thing to "bring a plate", usually a salad, along with some beer or a bottle of plonk.  I have to admit that at first I was a bit overwhelmed and resorted to buying salads from the deli counter at the supermarket to bring along.  I did however find myself sheepish upon arriving with my plastic tubs when everyone else came with with plates of what seemed to me like dazzling displays of domesticity!  How much can change though in 4 years (yes, we're here 4 years this March!).  Now I have a list of Top 5 salads that are easy peasy to whip up for summer barbeques.  What's even better is that with our veggie patch, more and more of the ingredients can come directly from our backyard!

So, here they are - my current Top 5 summer salads.  Click on the titles for links to the recipes.
This one comes courtesy of NZ celebrity cook Annabel Langbein.
We had a fantastic crop of beetroot this year and my favourite way to use it is definitely roasted.  Yum!
You simply can't go wrong with this classic.

Penne tossed in Green Pesto
Not strictly a salad but works well served cold so why not?  It's been fantastic making fresh pesto from our own basil.  This is the recipe I use.

& last but not least

Beetroot and Greek Yoghurt Salad
You'll have to wait until next time I make this for a photo but it is super easy and always gets lots of complements.  Just take some canned beetroot chunks and mix with as much Greek yoghurt as to your liking - for 2 cans of beetroot, I generally go for between one half cup and one cup of yoghurt.  Lightly toast some sliced almonds andtop. Et, voila!

Holiday Packing

With only 2 days to go until we embark on our month long holiday, I really need to get serious about packing.  Not a task I relish, I must admit.

For me, a good list is always the right starting point and never one keen to reinvent the wheel, I was delighted to find this nifty travel list tool on The Universal Packing List.  You input some key information about your trip like dates, max and min temperatures of where you'll be, what activities you'll be involved in etc. and an extremely comprehensive set of lists is generated for you.  Don't you love the internet?

I do wish that I had some stylish, matching luggage to carry all my gear in though.  We'll be making do with an assemblage of mismatched cases that, to be fair, have seen better days.

Even if money were no object I still don't think I'd go for a matching set of LV luggage.  It's nice and I'm sure the quality is fantastic but isn't it just a little too predictable at this stage?

This set by Globe-Trotter might do rather nicely however!

Apparently, Globe-Trotter is the go-to luggage for all those who are well traveled and the company's client list includes Queen Elizabeth II.

Only thing is, I'm not sure these babies come with wheels.  While this might work ok for Lizzie, I might struggle a bit ... at least until I have my very own valet!! : ) Back to Samsonite in the meantime perhaps.

Our brief for the Great (to us!) Villa Extension

I need to follow up with our architect to see how he's getting on with generating some concepts for us.  Here's the brief we put together listing all our requirements:

By building the extension, we wish to create a property that overall has 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and 2 living areas.

Our preference is for contemporary architecture rather than a more traditional style.

We favour clean, simple design and would like a clear definition between the old and the new.

Other requirements set out below:

·         Indoor/outdoor flow (a must have) -
Via Trendsideas

·         Maximum privacy to the rear of the property

·         Outdoor entertaining/eating area -
Via Trendsideas

·         Sky tower view -

·         One living area for watching TV and one living area for conversation

·         ‘Conversation’ living area to incorporate gas fire

Nice to haves include:

·         Separate study space

·         Separate utility and pantry

·         Retention of 'sleep out' as studio/garden room.

The Mini-Gift List

I admit it – I am a difficult person to buy a gift for.  The problem is that I know far too well what I like and what I want.  There’s an ongoing scouting and editing process going on in my head that no one else could possibly keep up with or fully decipher.  As a consquence ‘himself’ rather understandably gets very stressed leading up to Christmas and my birthday.  So this Christmas just passed, I decided to help him out (yes, I know I’m fantastic).  As we’d agreed to only get eachother mini presents, I put together a list of gifts each costing less than $100 that he could choose from and I even gave him some direction on where to go to buy them!  Here's my list:

1.     An orchid (they even have them in Foodtown i.e. our local supermarket!)

2.     A posh scented candle from Mecca Cosmetica

via meccacosmetica.com.au

3.     Gift Voucher for the place I get my nails done

Pedicure-at-home

4.     Silver wallet from Country Road

5.     White Hands bookends (on lower floor in Borders on Queen Street)
via urbanattitude.com.au

6.     Years Subscription to Your Home and Garden

7.     Book called 21st Century Houses Down Under (It’s in Borders)
8.     Shower gel to go with my perfume (Vera Wang)

9.     Vintage champagne saucers from TradeMe or Ebay (the ones Marilyn drank from)

via thefashionmagpie.com

 10.  And if ever unsure - a small bottle of a nice brand of champagne

I ended up receiving two lovely gifts from my list and a third non list item.  Turns out that the list actually inspired him and gave him the confidence to choose something all by himself!

Now if he’s a really good boy, he’ll surprise me with another item when I least suspect it!
